More victims surface in credit scam
Halton police say further charges are possible against an employee of a private licencing office in the theft of credit cards from elderly clients.
The 23-year-old Hamilton woman, who worked at the Ministry of Transportation office on Cross Avenue, Oakville, is already charged with breach of trust and four counts of theft of credit cards. She had worked at the office from May to December of last year.
In a press release after she was charged on Jan. 12, police said four credit cards were stolen from clients who had used them to pay for drivers licences and renew plate stickers.
"The former employee would retain the cards and the client would leave the office not realizing it wasn't returned," police said.
The alleged scam started to unravel on Dec. 19 when a 24-year-old man, whom police described as an "accomplice," was caught at Oakville Place buying goods with two of the stolen cards.
He was charged with use and possession of stolen credit cards and obstructing justice. At the time of his arrest, he was awaiting deportation from Canada.
As result of publicity from the previous arrests, Halton police said they received more complaints from other Oakville residents who had their cards stolen.
